High Hill

That same afternoon, Rain was completing an order for a custom hope chest in his workshop. He threw himself into the work to avoid thinking about his family issues and the rough sex he’d had with Chrissie that left him slightly ashamed.

What was that, now? His phone. Rain shut off the circular saw and shoved the workman’s goggles up his forehead and into his hair. A fine layer of dust covered him head to toe. He set down the tool and worked his vibrating device out of his back pocket. Now what did she want? He hit the green icon and greeted his cousin. “Hello, Sarah Jane.”

Sarah Jane wasted not one breath. “Rain, your woman might be having an affair with Livingston Queensbury,” his cousin declared.

“I beg your pardon?”

“You recall my friend who works in that hospital? Joy? Well, she knows for a fact Chrissie is seeing Livingston again.”

“For a fact, my ass. Livingston and Chrissie? If your friend thinks that’s news, she’s as observant as a pillbug. They broke up years ago.”

Sarah Jane took offence at his tone. “You’ll find that Livingston has moved back to the mountain, Rain. And he works at your woman’s hospital!”

Rain scowled. What?

“Since when?” Rain growled.

“Couple months. I believe he moved into that house on Regina Hill right after his daddy died of that heart attack.”

“Do you have any actual proof, or am I to take idle gossip from some woman I’ve never met as the Lord’s truth?”

“You’re blinding yourself to what’s in front of you. Be careful– remember I warned you from the very beginning!”
